PI stands for "Per Inquiry". Commonly used in broadcast and cable TV, you
pay for the commercial time based on responses to a 1-800 number. The cost
you pay is a percentage of the item cost you are selling, or an agreed upon
amount to the station or network. ie: you are selling a product for $25.00,
and for every response call you receive, you pay the station $8.00 per
inquiry. Very few broadcast stations accept PI's anymore, as well as the
better viewed cable networks. They do, however, give a decent rate for direct
response ads; you pay for every commercial, but the rate is reduced because
the inventory you get is based on un-sold avails or local break blocks that
are not seen over the entire network. Hope this helps. The same concept
works for other media as well.
