>You're right, that personal attacks are not permitted on >this list, but I "heard" an attack on a *post*, which is >the nature of lists. And the post attacked was a spam, >which is not acceptable anywhere. >The *attack* was also on MLM, also fair. Playing semantic >games like "network" marketing does not legitimize a >business. If 35,000 people are victims of MLM schemes >weekly, that does not legitimize them. If 75% of the US >buys MLM products that is no more justification than saying >75% of everyone has been a crime victim- I'm not equating >MLM with crime, merely pointing out that numbers do not >equal legitimacy. >I wonder how many of the 35,000 are the same week to week, >the type who look for the easy money promise of MLM. >I also wonder how many of the 75% have bought from the >fairly legit "MLM" like Tupperware/Avon/Mary K versus the >pyramid schemes. >On another list recently, someone made the key >distinguishing point between legit and bad MLM: >Legit has a limited "downline", perhaps 4 levels: >manufacturer-distributor-sales manager-salesperson, and >focuses on selling product. >The bad have an infinite downline, and focus on recruiting >the downline, (to which they then sell, rather than selling >product itself. >Abby Dear Abby: It is my opinion that you missed the point of my posting. It was not my purpose to convince anyone on the merits of network marketing, and neither am I interested in such an exercise. It is obvious from your response that this would not be possible anyway - you evidently have very strong convictions. It is perhaps because of your strong convictions that you saw Jacques post as an attack on the *post* of Brian rather than on Brian himself. Jacques post obviously supported your views of network marketing, and I suspect he probably knew that it would appeal to many people with like views. My point is, that not only was Brian attacked but so were the thousands of present and future network marketers including some close friends of mine. The measure of whether or not something is a personal attack can only be determined by consulting with the person or persons who are the brunt of the attack. I have not consulted with Brian, but I would suspect that he was offended by Jacques post, or at least found it vexatious. I certainly found it so, and that cannot be denied by anyone. There were actually five offending comments: 1. Subject: No subject MLM SPAM - This is judgmental and has no supporting evidence, and therefore is a direct attack on the Integrity of Brian. 2. MLM Junk e-mail- This is also a personal attack and has an inflammatory effect. 3. "...everyone hates your name..." - Also inflammatory and suggests that Jacques believes that everyone agrees with his view. 4. "..go into a legitimate business..." - A personal attack on character, suggesting, again without supporting evidence, that the business that Brian is in, is illegitimate. 5. "...or get a job..." - Again inflammatory, suggesting that Brian is is not employed because what he is doing does not conform to the belief system of Jacques. It is true that the purpose of this and most forums is to discuss. Jacques is entitled to express his views on the pros and cons of MLM in a constructive and evidentiary fashion. In my view, that clearly was not the intent of the post. Similarly, you have taken the opportunity in your post to further expound your negative views on MLM in order to diffuse the real issue of personal attack. In fact you have demonstrated your full support of Jacques post by using the same technique, i.e. an attack without supporting evidence: an appeal to the emotions >And the post attacked was a spam, >which is not acceptable anywhere. >35,000 people are victims of MLM schemes weekly I do not know anything about Brian's business because I haven't researched it. You are obviously very sure. You must have researched it well. But I still reserve judgment, because you and Jacques have shown that I cannot trust yours. Regards, Dave.
