This post made me take note of a point I missed when the
original message was posted. Sr. Esteban was posting in
regard to Spani and Latin America under this subject line.
Here in the US, "Hispanic" refers to US residents whose
origins are from Spanish speaking countries, but *not* to
residents of those countries, ie a Spaniard in Spain is not
a Hispanic, while a US citizen who imigrated from Spain is.
In fact, hispanic is a marketing/political/sociological
demographic term. People (especially Hispanics themselves)
outside those fields often vociferously repudiate the
Hispanic label, prefering "Latino" or "Chicano," or
Mexican-American, etc.
Has the word "Hispanic" migrated out of the US and taken on
a new or additional meaning?
